Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween!

Fashion people generally love to dress up for Halloween. After all it is the chance to dress like someone you're not, in fact it is expected. The more outrageous your costume is, usually the more reaction it generates from friends and loved ones. It is the one time of year in which you can be whomever you want.

Personally, I tend to usually procrastinate and become overwhelmed with the endless possibilities. Unless planned way in advance and I mean waaaay in advance....like middle of summer advance, I sadly scramble to put something together.

Funny enough I have never wanted to be someone scary. As a kid I tended to go for the basics like a witch or a ghost. Since college Halloween has always been the perfect excuse to dress slutty..there was the slutty cop, the belly dancer (pretty slutty), the Greek Goddess (sort of slutty) and the German Beer Girl (the sluttiest). Funny enough I don't recall ever feeling comfortable in these costumes, in fact I usually felt super uncomfortable in them, which is not exactly how you want to feel if you want to look sexy.

Therefore, although I am sure you already have your costume picked out this year my advice to you is that whatever costume you choose, whether it's scary or basic or funny or slutty, just make sure you rock it! Don't rock it enough to get by, convince people you are who you're dressed up as.

My best costume EVER (so far) was the time I dressed up as Trinity from the Matrix. I didn't exactly choose it, it just happened to be the last costume at the Halloween store that fit (no joke) and so I bought it and decided to make the best of it. I spray painted my light hair black, wore sunglasses all night (even inside) and funny enough (quite funny to me) introduced myself to EVERYONE as Trinity. I even made my friends call me Trinity that night. It worked! Everyone believed that I was Trinity and people LOVED it. Best reaction I have ever had to a costume and all because I felt comfortable and owned it.

Therefore, it doesn't matter if you dress slutty or even if you look exactly like who you are dressed up as. What is important is that you OWN IT! So get out there and don't be afraid to work it!
Happy Halloween!!!

Gladiator Heels

I saw these Gladiator Heels from Paris Fashion Week Photos and was instantly mesmerized. I love that they are inspired by a real historical shoe (the gladiators during Roman times) but have been updated and give off an edgy vibe. Of course, these are only for those who are willing to take a fashion risk, but wearing them will for sure turn heads!

I looked everywhere, but could only find these awesome Stuart Weitzman sandals which I would also love!

White Leather Jacket

I don't generally like to buy things way out of season, meaning I won't be inclined to buy new boots until it is cold enough to wear them. I usually also don't really buy a new swimsuit until the day before a pool party, but I will admit I did buy a leather jacket in the middle of July....

Here is why, last winter I wore my black leather jacket ALL the time. I love it, so much so that I would say it is a definite staple in my wardrobe. In fact I have already pulled it out and started to wear it on cold days. Therefore when I started to see Winter trends (last summer), I saw a lot of white and figured I would take a chance on the white leather jacket.

I wanted this one:

Iro Quilted Jacket found here

I got this one from Topshop but it is now sold out.

Similar one found here for only $20!!!
It is finally getting chilly and I can't wait to wear it out!

Ankle Boots

Cold weather officially means boot season! Even though it hasn't exactly been cold in Southern California lately, it will be soon. Ankle boots are therefore definitely on my Fall wishlist! Great thing is that you can wear them with skinny jeans, leggings, or skirts making them very versatile. If you can only buy one new shoe this season I would recommend the ankle boot!

There are many different types, but here are some of my favorites!

Rag and Bone

Chinese Laundry

For some reason I have been wanting grey boots and these Steve Madden boots are cool. If you are looking to vamp up your outfit there are these Jessica Simpson booties that also happen to be on sale!
If you are into an edgier look then I would suggest this Steve Madden style.

Pick the style that best suits you, luckily there are many choices! Which will you choose?

Gianvito Rossi Ankle Strap Sandal

White heels made a come back this summer. While perusing the Internet the other day I came across this pair by Gianvito Rossi and was instantly struck by the back part of the sandal. I love how it looks like a cape that I imagine fits perfectly around your ankle, providing not only extra support, but would make your ankle look AMAZING!

Socks for the Boys

I haven't really posted a lot on Men's style, but if there are any men reading this (or women looking for a fun gift for the men in their lives) socks are a great way to show some personality!

Inspired by the photo above, I went in search of fun socks and found all sorts of cool things.

For the man who is still a child at heart and maybe a little silly there are Dinosaur socks which are awesome as well as Shark socks. I mean who doesn't love sharks?

A few of my guy friends are avid bike riders and these bike socks would be a fun gift.

The man that isn't as silly but is still up for trying some fun color these American Apparel socks would do the trick.

If you're all business, but still want to add a pop of style then I recommend these Ted Baker socks or these Argyle socks.

Whichever you choose, it is an inexpensive way to add some flair and just don't be afraid to go all out! I mean after all, they are just socks. Have some fun with it! That is what fashion is all about, stepping out and expressing yourself.

People- Gwen Stefani

Looking back it isn't always easy to see who or what inspired you. As a kid, you are exposed to so many things and at times in can be hard to pinpoint exactly who or what influenced you. That being said, I was driving the other day listening to No Doubt on the radio when I had a flashback to my thirteen year old self.

The year was 1995 and it was my summer break. I was doing what all teenagers at that time did, watching MTV when I first saw No Doubt's video, Spiderwebs, thus introducing me to the lovely Gwen Stefani. I was memorized by the music and most importantly by Gwen's style. In fact I loved her clothes so much that I tried to emulate her, even though I looked and still look nothing like Gwen. The closest I got was a light blue dress that looked very similar to the one she wore in the video "Don't Speak" that I picked up at a surf shop.

Either way, since then Gwen has always been my favorite rock star and I have and will continue to admire her amazing style.

When I was a little girl, JCPenney and Sears would send a big Christmas catalog in the mail every year. It was a fun tradition of mine to look through it and pick out what I liked....alright maybe I didn't just casually look at  it. Truth was I would pour over it intensely and circle ALL the things (toys) I wanted. Of course I never got all of it. At most I may have gotten one thing, but it was always fun to imagine having all of the toys that were displayed in the catalog. Looking back the time I would spend on a weekend afternoon looking through it was probably better than actually receiving the toys that were in that book. It allowed my imagination to run free and taught me the lesson that we can't always have all the things we want, but it is fun and important to dream!

As an adult, there is a new catalog that I look forward to each holiday season, the Neiman Marcus Christmas Book. It has a fantasy section that is often times very ridiculous and completely out of most people's financial scopes, but again it's fun to look through and dream.

Here are two of my favorites from this year's catalog:

Ultimate Outdoor Entertainment System $1,500,000

For one and a half million you get your own projector with sound system that pops out of your grass for the ultimate outdoor viewing experience. For an additional million you can upgrade the sound system. Don't believe me? Read it for yourself here! It would be pretty sweet to have this in your backyard. Gives movie night a whole new meaning.

The Glass House Experience $30,000

You and a lucky guest can experience a one night stay in the Connecticut glass house of world- renowned architect, Phillip Johnson. Wander the 49 acre grounds until nightfall when ten of your lucky friends get to come over and join you for a wonderful locally sourced "culinary experience". Read more about it here!

Check out the rest of the Fantasy Gifts in the Neiman Marcus catalog and pick out which you would put on your dream list this year.

Fun Clutches/Pouches

When it comes to accessories, sometimes it can be fun to skip practical and go with novelty. It not only shows personality, but in some cases can be a conversation starter. I have been seeing fun clutches everywhere and I have to admit it would be really great to carry one of these!

This "wise" owl clutch also has a strap. This would look great for a night out.
Find it by clicking here!

This pouch reminds me of my childhood, when my Mom used to send letters abroad in a special envelope that looked much like this! Also love the detail, the Eiffel Tower toggle on the zipper is awesome, but the best part is that it is under $20. Love it? Find it by clicking here!

Maybe it is all the traveling I have been doing recently, but I also thought this pouch was fun and it's also under $20. Who knew novelty could be so affordable?

Leather Pleated Skirt

Leather is going to be HUGE this winter! From jackets to boots to pants to skirts, leather is going to be EVERYWHERE! With that being said, leather can sometimes feel really rock and roll. If you are the type that prefers a more subdued leather look, then the leather pleated skirt is a great option. It adds a touch of leather without getting too crazy! Plus, the pleats allow it to conservatively sneak leather into your office look. Pair it with a tucked in blouse and you're ready to go!

I found this style at Nordstrom and this one at Zara, both under $100. Check them out!

Colored Suede Pointy Heels

Photo: Style.com

Colored heels have been on trend for a while now, but when I saw this photo taken on the streets of Paris' recent Fashion Week, I was immediately inspired! My closet IS missing a bright colored suede pointy heel.

Manolo Blahnik started the trend with these bright lovelies. If you are like me and aren't ready to spend a fortune on one pair of shoes though, check out these, or for a different option these!

Accessories- Floppy Hat

Apart from what I call my "pool hat", (a straw fedora that I wear when I am at the beach or the pool), I don't wear too many hats in the summer time. I love hats though and find that during the winter time, hats not only function in keeping my head warm, but they are also an outfit game changer! Plus, the best part is that you can throw it on when you are in a hurry to cover messy dirty hair, as that is how it looks best!

I came across this hat and instantly imagined all the cool ways that I could wear it this winter!

Find, the Free People hat shown above by clicking here!

I also found this awesome hat,  this one, or if you are on a budget this one!

Slip Dress

The 90's are known in Fashion as the "grunge era". It was inspired by Seattle bands, plaid flannel shirts, Doc Marten boots and overalls. My favorite thing that came out of the grunge era though is slip dresses. Slip dresses were worn with long cardigan sweaters and Doc Marten boots, a look that could easily be worn today.

It's also a great transitional outfit to wear as the days and nights get cooler. Layering a sweater over a slip dress also looks great!

Another alternative is to pair a long cardigan with a slip dress. This works great for days that are warm that turn into cold nights.

So look in your closets, and wear those sweaters with those ever so girly slip dresses!

I found this Rochas slip dress or this Free People dress that would look great paired with this cozy cardigan by Skin.

News: Marc Jacobs leaves Louis Vuitton

"Designer Marc Jacobs ended his sixteen year tenure at Louis Vuitton with his Spring 2014 collection". Big news in the fashion world since he has been at Louis Vuitton for almost two decades. This article, taken from "The Cut" gives a great description of what the last show was like and what inspired Marc Jacobs for his final exit.....

"spring 2014 collection that celebrated fashion in its purest and least complicated form — as majestic, superficial beauty. The word superficial comes with such negative connotations, suggesting that whatever it is applied to has no value. But the emotional pull of beauty for its own sake cannot be underestimated. It is what draws us to a golden sunset, has us contemplating gardens in full bloom, and inspires us to climb a rocky mountain in search of the next magical overlook."

"This unquenchable desire for visual pleasure, Jacobs wrote in his show notes, was what inspired the collection."

Flamingo Short Sleeve Coat

A while ago, I posted about my love of Flamingos. In case you missed it you can read it by clicking here!

So, it is safe to say that I have been into Flamingos for a while and they have slowly been popping up!

Today I found this coat worn by someone during Paris Fashion Week and just had to share!

It made me think about what attracts someone to a specific item of clothing and while sometimes it can be the brand, or the cut; most of the time it's because it probably just speaks to them. This coat, while very lovely does not particularly reflect my own personal style, but I was drawn to it because of my love of flamingos.
Therefore it spoke to me, not in a "you must go out and have it" kind of way, but more like an "aw, that's a pretty awesome coat" kind of way. Sometimes it is just fun to admire someone else wearing something interesting!
