Faux Fur Stole

A couple of weeks back at my company holiday party, a colleague wore a faux fur stole with her dress. It literally "stole" the show and added an element of style that was classic yet unique.

Stoles, popular in the '20's, as Daisy wore in the Great Gatsby picture above, were often a sign of wealth and made from real fur. Lucky for us, faux (fake) fur is now the trend. Since the party I have noticed stoles popping up like this Anthropologie one (on sale) and this Nordstrom one (that looks very similar to the picture below). It definately has me thinking it could be the perfect addition to my New Year's Eve outfit…..

Stoles, popular at winter weddings, are a great way to keep warm while looking elegant.

Found this vintage ad from Neiman Marcus and had to include it.

Slip Dress

Slip dresses became popular in the 90's, but like so many other trends they have hung around. Actually I blogged about Slip dresses last year, (found here), which tells me that they will always be welcome in our closets. While it is too cold to wear them on their own right now, they are perfect to wear under a sweater or coat with lace up boots and a beanie. Come Spring they can be worn on their own (depending on how sheer they are) or with a T-shirt and long necklace thrown over it, with sandals.

Zara is currently having a sale on the style above. Snatch it up here before it's gone.

I also found a Whistles Slip Dress  (on sale) and this cool plaid Clover Canyon slip dress  (on sale as well).

Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays!

I've always loved this time of year. As the years go by, I realize that it isn't about the gifts or the food (although they are nice). It's about spending time with those that mean the most to you and taking the time to be thoughtful of others.

This holiday season, wherever you are and whatever your traditions are, take the time to enjoy them!

May you have a festive and joyous occasion.

Thank you for reading the blog!

I'll be back to posting about what inspires me in fashion next week.

Men's Down Sweater Jacket

This past Sunday I ventured out for my weekly trip to Trader Joe's (a grocery store) and encountered several men wearing this Patagonia Men's Down Sweater Jacket in several different colors. It looked even better in person and seemed really comfy. They also make several Women's versions like this one and this one! Down jackets for everyone! Find them all by going to Patagonia's website!

Nude Evening Sandal

Holiday parties are upon us! While I love looking at all the pretty dresses, my eyes will inevitably end up darting to the floor to check out everyone's footwear. Personally, I've been on the search for nude evening sandals and here is what I was inspired by:

1. Reed Krakoff ( find out more here!)

2.  Charlotte Olympia (link here!)

It's Raining….

I woke up this morning to the sound of rain! It's one of the most comforting sounds and much needed in dry California. Guess it's time I invest in one of these! Might as well get a fun one….

Happy Rainy Tuesday!

Bright Coats

My winter wardrobe seems to teeter towards black, grey and charcoal (which is really just a variance of black and grey)....boring!
While out shopping the other day, (after picking up yet another charcoal sweater) I realized that my  tendency to lean toward grey in winter is due to the fact that there really aren't very many colorful options to choose from. This is why I love the idea of a bright coat. It's perfect! It still let's you keep your black and charcoal wardrobe, but adds just enough "pop" to brighten up any outfit.

Finding colorful options wasn't really that easy. Here some I found:

1. Ted Baker $525 (Pink)

2. Asos $123.18 (Yellow)

3. Top Shop $178 (Red)

White On White Outfit

Photo: Stockholm Streetstyle

If you were on the Internet today then you probably saw this famous lady's wedding photos.  I love that she mixed some flair into her wedding and threw the ultimate white party (a party where everyone invited only wears white). White on white outfits are super stylish. It is a trend that always makes me take a second look.

Fashion Friday Quote

Love this quote so much! Alexander Wang is known for his amazing basics that are draped nicely and for using amazing fabrics. I would wear his clothes on a day off in a heart beat.

Also agree that we all get dressed up for work or for an event, but it's how you dress when there is nothing planned that is often the most interesting. There have definitely been many times where I have thrown together crazy outfits (some genius and others awful) and worn them out on my days off (weekends). My days off are definitely when I have had the most creative wardrobe freedom to just be me!

To practicing outfits this weekend! Let the creativity flow!

Vivienne Westwood Taxa Top

Came across this Vivienne Westwood Taxa Draped Cotton Top and was immediately inspired! Too often, tops are extremely boring, but this one is draped and would add texture to any outfit. Love!

Men's Peacoat

I've always thought there was something special about Peacoats, that makes anyone who wears them appear sophisticated and sleek in a professional way. Thus when a man I know recently asked me which coat he should get, I immediately recommended a Peacoat. A quick peruse around the internet and I came across this Kenneth Cole Reaction (on sale),  this Banana Republic one and this JCrew coat. All perfect for the man who wants a sleek new coat this winter, because after all what man wouldn't want to look sophisticated and sleek?

Panama Hat

Hats are probably one of, if not the most overlooked women's fashion accessory. Even though it is one of the most simple ways to pull together an outfit while simultaneously hiding a bad hair day, I always think twice about wearing a hat. I give it a second thought because to be honest wearing a hat can be a commitment. I don't know about anyone else but once I put a hat on my hair goes flat and I pretty much can't take it off, until I'm home.... alone.

That being the other day while cruising through Urban Outfitters, I casually tried this Panama Style hat on and haven't been able to stop thinking about it since. Seriously considering ordering it and stepping up my hat game, even if it that means having to commit to wearing it all day.

Lace Up Boots

Instagram is a constant source of inspiration. It feels like sometimes images pop into my feed at exactly the right time. Take the picture above, posted to Nordstrom's Instagram page yesterday (who by the way is currently having a clearance sale through Veteran's Day).

Coincidentally, brown lace up boots just happened to be very high on my list of items to buy for Fall. Also called combat boots or military boots, they are super on trend!  I thought I would find the perfect pair quickly, but that wasn't the case at first. Of course, once you find one pair you like a few more usually follow.

Click below to see what I found.

1. Frye Lace Up Boots $368

2. UGG "Marela" $225

3.Steve Madden $99.95 (featured in the picture above)

Weekend(er)

I have been searching for the perfect Weekender bag for a while now. It all started when I was on a road trip with a work colleague and had packed all of my overnight things in a tote. Of course my bag got knocked over in the trunk during the drive and most of my things got scattered. As I watched my deodorant and other toiletries strewn across the back of this person's car I swore to never pack an overnight bag in a tote again.

Thus my search began for a zip top bag that I could double as a carry on or overnight bag. I realized during my search that its actually hard to find something the right size, that isn't boring (black) and is affordable. After a couple of months of searching I think I have found the perfect one. It comes in many colors and is from a cool company called Everlane which is all about basic items, like T-shirts, sweaters and now weekenders! The company is very transparent to its customers. It lists how much everything really costs to make and includes the retail mark up. I've ordered from them before and the quality is  really good all at an affordable price.

If you haven't checked them out I would for sure recommend it.

As for the weekender, click here to see the one I picked.

Rain Boots

California is currently in a drought, the worst it has seen in years. Lucky for us Californians though, it rained on Friday. The rain always makes me want rain boots, but I am always on the fence about getting a pair. This due to the fact that it doesn't rain all that often and when it does, not really long enough to  warrant wearing them....BUT rain boots are fun and maybe one day I will cave and get a pair, just because!

Below, some of the ones I would pick. Click on the links to check them out!

Trick or Treat

How did Halloween turn into a holiday where old and young dress up like something or someone they are not? Why is it the one time of year that taking candy from strangers is not only allowed but actively encouraged?

This NPR article actually explains that Halloween, which started as a Celtic holiday and was brought to America by early immigrants was initially a child's holiday, but that adults always participated. In the early 19th century Halloween was about harmless pranks. Those who were pulling the pranks wore masks so as to not be recognized. It wasn't until the Depression era that the pranks started getting more serious. The instigators started demanding treats to avoid tricks. Early twentieth century consumerism responded by offering candy and decorations as a way to lessen the violence.  All of these factors helped turn Halloween into what we now know today. So dress up and enjoy some treats!

Happy Halloween!

Fashion Sweatpants

Fashion and Sweatpants aren't normally mentioned in the same sentence, but this is changing.
A recent National Retailer's Federation article stated that Athletic inspired clothing was the fastest growing sector in retail. What does this mean? Basically it means that more and more people are wearing yoga pants and clothing one would normally wear to the gym out in public in their everyday life.

Sometimes fashion dictates trends, but society and culture also influence fashion. Therefore it isn't surprising that designers have created the "fashion sweat pant" to fill this growing niche.

It isn't for everyone, but like anything it's all about how you style it.

Below a couple of options (click on the brand names to check it out):

Work Jumpsuit

I love that jumpsuits, once seen as possibly tacky and something made for children has matured into something I really want to wear to work. Thinking the outfit above is the perfect work outfit, paired with an awesome pair of heels like THESE! Ok, so the heels aren't for everyone but the jumpsuit totally is!

Blue Pleated Midi Skirt

I found this picture on the internet months ago and kept it in a folder with my collection of photos that interest me. I love many things about this photo...first the bag is amazing, second LOVE the color combination of yellow and royal blue! Props to whomever this woman is for putting those two colors together. Third, the pleated midi skirt is now on my Fall wish list.

I wasn't sure about pleated skirts at first but they have been growing on me and I think I want one! I found this one at Asos and this one at Top Shop. Both are pretty fabulous and not too expensive. Thinking I may have to take a cue from this picture and look for a yellow blouse...

Intro to Fall - Capes

The leaves have started to turn, school has started again and pumpkin everything is popping up at the grocery store, which can only mean one thing, Fall has arrived. The cooler weather means that you will soon need something to keep you warm. That something this season are Capes!

The best thing about capes is that they come in all sorts of different varieties, from casual tribal prints like this Asos one to sleek ones like this Saint Laurent hooded cape. You can also find them with fur, like this Top Shop version (faux of course) or in grey like this found at Nordstrom.

Which kind will you be wearing?

Inspiration - Gucci Bag

While flipping through September issues, I came across the ad campaign for Gucci and saw the amazing bag above. I love the sleek design and the fact that it is high quality without all the logos. Very subtle, which is chic. Good handbags are hard to find and if you want a classic bag that will last a few years, then this is definitely an option.

This one is for sure going on my Christmas wish list....

2014 Emmy Dresses

It's award season time, which means time to pick your favorite Emmy dress!

This year, there were lots of amazing dresses. As I personally search for a gown to wear to a wedding later this year I am struck with the fact that almost all of the Emmy dresses hit a current evening gown trend. On trend dresses include long silhouettes with layers of ombre (taken from recent hair trends), strapless gowns with slits, side cutouts and one shoulder gowns. The color that dominated last night was definitely red. There were also lots of metallics, shades of white and pops of yellow (which I loved to see).

Some of my favorites shown below. What were yours?

Allison Williams in Giambattista Valli Couture

Cat Deely in Burberry

January Jones in Prabal Gurung

Lizzy Caplan in Donna Karan Atelier

Kaley Cuoco in Monique Lhullier

Mark Ruffalo and Sunrise Coigney in Lanvin

Julia Louis- Dreyfus in Carolina Herrera
